How Suicide Prevention UK Supports Bath’s Night-Time Economy Through the Welfare Team

Suicide Prevention UK is proud to provide the Bath Welfare Team—a frontline initiative safeguarding the wellbeing of individuals during the busiest hours of Bath’s nightlife. As the city center welcomes thousands each weekend, our team is there to offer reassurance, support, and intervention where needed.

Providing Safety in the Night-Time Economy

Bath’s thriving night-time economy includes a diverse mix of over 650 Bath BID (Business Improvement District) levy-payer businesses, with approximately 232 hospitality venues including bars, clubs, pubs, and late-night eateries. While these businesses contribute significantly to Bath’s culture and economy, the Welfare Team fills a crucial gap by being present where and when people are most vulnerable.

Our volunteer-led team patrols key areas, offering emotional support, basic first aid, safeguarding, and referrals to emergency services when needed. Their presence helps reduce the burden on police and ambulance services, offering a compassionate response to those experiencing distress, intoxication, confusion, or isolation.

Trained Volunteers, Community-First Approach

Each Welfare Team member undergoes rigorous training in mental health awareness, trauma-informed communication, de-escalation techniques, and safeguarding practices. This ensures that every person they support receives care with dignity and respect. The team also carries radios, first aid equipment, and welfare supplies to respond effectively.

Working in Partnership with Bath BID and Local Businesses

Suicide Prevention UK works in close collaboration with Bath BID, which represents over 650 businesses. Many venues benefit directly from the Welfare Team’s presence, creating a safer environment for both staff and customers. Our partnership also helps businesses meet their duty of care responsibilities and fosters a more connected community.

Bath BID has highlighted the importance of coordinated safety efforts through initiatives like the Safe and Secure Night-Time Economy Meeting, which brings together business owners, emergency services, and welfare partners.
