Equipping Bath’s Night-Time Economy with Life-Saving Skills: SPUK delivers Frontline Training

Suicide Prevention UK is proud to be delivering specialist training for businesses involved in Bath’s night-time economy as part of the Safe and Secure Night-Time Economy initiative, in partnership with Bath BID.

At the heart of this initiative is our shared commitment to creating a safer, more compassionate environment for everyone enjoying, working in, or supporting Bath after dark. With over 232 hospitality venues in the city centre and more than 650 BID levy-payer businesses, staff are often the first to notice when someone is in distress. We’re equipping them with the tools to respond safely and effectively.

Why This Training Matters

Suicide is a leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 34 in the UK. The Office for National Statistics reported over 5,000 suicides in England in the latest available year. Many of these deaths are preventable, and early intervention can play a critical role.

Alcohol and drug use are significant risk factors for suicide. Intoxication lowers inhibitions, increases impulsivity, and can intensify feelings of despair or anxiety. When people are under the influence, they may act on suicidal thoughts more quickly or with less consideration. The night-time economy is a high-risk environment because of the widespread use of alcohol and the social nature of drug use.

That’s why Suicide Prevention UK sees the night-time economy as a vital frontline in mental health intervention. Staff at venues are often in a position to recognise early signs of crisis—whether someone is isolated, crying, disoriented, or showing unusual behavior—and act before it’s too late.

Training Overview

Our bespoke training sessions are designed for front-of-house staff, bar managers, door staff, and other team members working late-night shifts. The content is practical, trauma-informed, and tailored specifically to the kinds of scenarios staff regularly face.

Topics covered include:

  • Recognising signs of distress and vulnerability in patrons
  • Approaching people safely and with compassion
  • De-escalation and safeguarding techniques
  • Understanding the role of the Bath Welfare Team
  • When and how to request support from welfare patrols or emergency services
  • Real-life scenarios based on our team’s direct patrol experience

Delivered by Experienced Frontline Trainers

Each session is delivered by members of the Suicide Prevention UK Welfare Team—people who’ve worked in real-time crisis situations and understand the realities of night-time vulnerability. Many have lived experience of suicide prevention and offer a unique, human-centred approach to teaching.

Businesses Already Taking Part

Several high-profile Bath venues have already taken part or are actively engaged with the training initiative, including:
