While many people wind down for the evening, volunteers from Suicide Prevention UK are stepping out — ready to offer real-time support to individuals who may be experiencing emotional crisis or suicidal thoughts.
Tonight, our trained teams will be out on patrol in Bristol, Bath, Keynsham, and surrounding areas, maintaining a visible presence and offering help to those who may be struggling in silence.
What Our Patrols Do
Suicide Prevention UK patrols operate in areas identified through historical data, community referrals, and risk indicators. Our volunteers don’t wait to be called — they proactively check in on locations where people may isolate themselves when overwhelmed by thoughts of suicide or distress.
These aren’t emergency responders — they’re trained, compassionate individuals who understand how to recognise the subtle signs that someone might be in trouble.
A calm approach, a non-judgemental voice, and simply being present in the right moment can make all the difference.
Where We’re Covering Tonight
Our patrols tonight include teams out in:
- Bristol city areas
- Bath and nearby residential and green space zones
- Keynsham and its surrounding communities
- Other localised patrol routes based on ongoing assessments and recent intelligence
Each team is in direct contact with our coordination centre and other welfare resources. Every route is planned with safety, sensitivity, and the individual’s dignity in mind.
How We Operate
Our volunteers wear clearly marked Suicide Prevention UK high-visibility vests and carry essential safety equipment. They’re trained in:
- Suicide prevention and mental health awareness
- Crisis communication and de-escalation
- Safeguarding and trauma-informed listening
- Referrals to additional support services
We work closely with community networks, local authorities, and crisis partners to ensure that any person we support is not left alone or without a way forward.
Why This Matters
Many people facing suicidal thoughts don’t reach out. Some don’t even realise how close they are to a breaking point. By placing trained, caring individuals where they’re most needed, Suicide Prevention UK can offer support before a crisis becomes a tragedy.
This quiet, proactive presence has already helped save lives — and continues to do so week after week.
You Can Help Us Keep Going
As a volunteer-led organisation, our work relies on public generosity. Every radio, every patrol vest, every litre of fuel is funded by donations from those who believe that life is worth protecting.
Here’s how you can support us:
